1899 COSMOPOLITAN FASHION SEWING PATTERNS
COLLECTION

Updated May 5, 2008

All patterns on this page were manufactured by Cosmopolitan Fashions, West Twenty-Third Street, New York City, and all date from 1899 or earlier. These are unused, old store stock and all but a few of these patterns appear in the 1899 Spring/Summer Cosmopolitan Patterns counter book, which we obtained with the patterns. Many of the envelopes may have shortcomings that are described below. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH CAREFULLY so that you know exactly what you are buying .... these patterns differ in sizing from later patterns and they are difficult for novice sewers to use. All patterns will be shipped in an acid-free plastic sleeve for future storage use.
All patterns are unmarked/precut plain tissue with perforations, and all are factory folded and unused. These were issued with NO pattern layout and were cut with NO seam allowances. Patterns were cut with the assumption that corsets, petticoats, and underwear would be worn beneath the fashions. You should order patterns by bust or waist size needed. Patterns are in brown paper envelopes (about the size of a small business envelope). They are printed on one side only with the Cosmopolitan company logo, an illustration of the fashion, and a brief instruction paragraph - NO separate instruction sheets were issued. Envelopes may have discoloration, wear, tears, etc. at the edges, some are open along one or both edges. PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING: On about half of the patterns the envelope flap is adhered to the pattern. In order to use the pattern, you will need to carefully slice open each short end of the envelope, which will allow the envelope to unfold accordion-style. You should then trim away the unattached portion of the flap from the tissue pattern. This will leave a small portion of the flap on the tissue. This is not difficult, nor is the flap on the tissue a problem, but IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO DEAL WITH THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE DO NOT ORDER! Since there is no printing on the envelope back, you may store the front in the acid-free plastic sleeve that it was shipped in (along with the pattern), or you could choose to laminate the front. I would not recommend trying to steam the flap loose.

**Please note: All patterns are original…. we do not sell reproductions or copies. All patterns have been counted and are complete unless otherwise noted. All prices INCLUDE first class shipping within the U.S. International customers should email for shipping cost. When requesting items, please use page title, line letter, and item number. If envelope or cover condition is important, please indicate so...most older paper items are not in mint condition and show normal-use wear, creases, and discoloration, unless otherwise indicated. If you are looking for specific items, email requests as we have an extensive library of early needlework patterns and references for sale. We buy daily…… please email with specifics if you have items to sell!
